Nigel’s view of the December 2008 meeting when with Jenny he took the stage!

This is the third year Jenny and I have run the December session.
Why do we keep taking the December slot?
“It allows us to bring along Mince Pies”. “It’s the time of year when roads can be treacherous so we don’t like to bring another speaker in from far away”. “You wouldn’t want us to run every session”. “We are using NLP constantly in our business”. “You are such a great group to play with, so we can ‘try’ out new techniques on you”. “We present to lots of other groups so why should you be let off!”

The really important thing for us is to share with the group our use of NLP in relationships. This year we also wanted to practice a little sketch to highlight the difference between men and women’s brains. You did know we think differently didn’t you?

Our plan for the evening was to work with one technique and through several exercises to deepen the effect and personal discovery for everyone. All relationships require us to be clear about ourselves, usually the first stumbling block. So we chose to use and expand upon a technique of self discovery called ‘Social Panorama’. Based on Virginia Satir’s family dynamics work and developed by Lucas Derks, a pyschotherapist in Europe. Further developed by us to apply the learning to how we relate to other people. We also added in some ‘clean’ questions for good measure as this is a very ‘metaphorical’ way of thinking.
Remembering my usual instructions to our guest speakers for them to do 10% and the group to do 90% it was time for us to stop playing and get you all involved. We were excited about watching the development of our latest discovery, but had to hold back as the group went through the setup procedure of making first impressions. Thanks to our volunteers for joining in so whole heartedly with this, especially George dubble U Bush.

We set up a camera to record this sketch, but due to inadequate instruction our camera operator failed to press ‘record’ so instead of watching us, have a look at Mark on YouTube. Our version was almost as funny, and also a little different as there were two of us! We have since performed this to a non NLP audience with great success.

Now you have watched the clip you will have a better idea of the trouble we all have understanding the opposite sex, never mind communicating effectively with them.

At almost no expense we recruited the help of two pumpkins. (Knowing that we finish well before the midnight deadline we felt sure they wouldn’t suddenly turn into something else.) We borrowed much of the material from Mark Gungor, a Pastor in the states, who works in helping relationships.

I enjoy every session at NLP-South and always come away with a new learning, a little aha! Some greater understanding about myself and a conviction about NLP as a force for good. Normally of course I’m one of the audience. If anything I learnt even more by being ‘up front’. One of our key objectives for the session was to test out a hypothesis. We noticed, particularly when Gemma Bailey came to play, how much could be got from an evening where there was time to explore one theme for the evening. (I know we took a bit of time with our little sketch, but that was our audience warm up act). Sticking with developing the ‘social panorama’ and deepening it each time around helped us see how far this could be taken. Further than we had time for on the evening.

As we bade farewell to 2008 and look forward to challenging times ahead in 2009 I feel sure that the inherent flexibility of NLP will help us all ride out the recession and be stronger and wiser because of it.  The speaker interview, which forms part of the Practice Pack for this session, was ably conducted by our good friend Gavin Meikle. Gavin has often run sessions at NLP-South and also has devised some interesting short courses on public speaking and being more organised.
